29% of Americans say they’d ever vote for a “democratic socialist.” That number is a product. Somebody paid for it.

Here is a poll number that took fifty years and billions of dollars to build. 29%. That is the share of Americans who told the Economist/YouGov poll, fielded June 26–29, 2026, that they would ever vote for a candidate who called themselves a “democratic socialist.” Sample: 1,606 adult citizens, margin of error about 3 points. 45% said never. 26% weren’t sure.
Now hold that next to a different number from the same country. In April 2026, Gallup found a record 55% of Americans saying their financial situation is getting worse. Not stuck. Worse. Highest Gallup has ever measured on that question.
Same voters. Same kitchen tables. One number about a word. One number about a life. The gap between those two numbers is not an accident. It is a purchase.

On November 5, 2025 — the morning after New York elected its mayor — the National Republican Congressional Committee launched a paid ad campaign in 49 battleground districts. Their own press release, their own words: “The socialist takeover is complete.” The tagline they paid to put in your feed: “Stop socialism. Why it matters
A political committee wrote down that its 2026 plan is a word, then bought airtime for it in 49 places where people are worried about money. That is a document, not a vibe.

The 29% is what a long, well-funded fear campaign looks like when it works. The word “socialism” has been the all-purpose stop sign of American politics since before most of us were born. Medicare was socialism. The minimum wage was socialism. Social Security — the program your grandmother lives on — was socialism, right up until it became untouchable.
Ask who is spending money on the word right now. Notice what the machine is not doing. It is not running 49 districts of ads about your rent. It is not posting at midnight about your grocery bill. It is spending its money to make sure that when you hear a politician talk about the cost of living, a word arrives in your head before the argument does. That’s what the 29% buys. It buys a reflex.
Power is testing something specific here: whether a 75-year-old reflex still fires in a country where the median renter is doing math at midnight. When a machine leans harder on a trigger, it usually means the trigger is wearing out.

The answer to a fear campaign is a specific conversation. Pick one:

Then do the free one: the next time someone says the word at you, ask them what it means. Watch how fast the conversation gets quiet, and then ask about their rent instead.
