The fastest way to understand the story is to click the database before anyone calls the conflicts hypothetical.
I have been in rooms where everybody loved ethics until ethics had a name.
Ethics in theory is easy. Ethics as a person with a badge, a file, a subpoena, a deadline, and a question about your former client is where the room gets cold.
They killed the watchdogs before the receipts could bark.
The Machine
The public is trained to wait for the cartoon version of corruption. A bag of cash. A secret meeting. A villain saying the quiet part into a microphone.
Modern corruption does not always need a bag. It needs a waiver, a disclosure range, an ethics agreement nobody reads, a former client, an agency portfolio, a spouse's holding, a crypto wallet, a recusal memo, a watchdog vacancy, and a public exhausted enough to call it process. That is why the 122,000 assets matter.
The Receipts
Receipt 01
Day 1 was the tells-you-everything receipt.

Receipt 02
The watchdog firings were not background noise.
ProPublica reported that weeks later, Trump fired 17 inspectors general charged with investigating fraud, corruption, and conflicts of interest. See why that matters.
Receipt 03
The ethics office was left hollowed out.
ProPublica reported that Trump removed the head of the Office of Government Ethics and that the office was without a head or chief of staff. Open the report.
Receipt 04
The database is the part they hope you never open.
ProPublica's Trump Team Financials listed 1,607 appointees, 3,596 documents, 122,000 assets reported, and $21 billion to $51 billion in reported asset values when checked for this packet. Search the database.
Receipt 05
The conflict question is the whole story.
The point is not that every holding is corrupt. The point is that the watchdogs are the system that makes the questions real. Read the conflict frame.
The Translation
This is not deregulation. It is demolition.
Deregulation says the rules are too burdensome. Demolition says the referee is the burden.
Remove the pledge. Remove the inspectors. Remove the ethics chief. Flood the government with people whose public disclosures require scrutiny. Then act offended when the public asks who is watching the watchers.
The Search Assignment
Pick one appointee. Pick one agency. Pick one industry. Then ask who benefits when nobody is watching.
