The Count | Voting Rights

Who Gets Counted?

The new power grab is not just who gets to vote. It is who gets to exist on paper.

By Michael Starr Hopkins, Editor

That sounds dramatic until you look at the week. The Court moved on Trump-power cases. The administration got help on immigration. A federal judge blocked Trump's voter-list order. Redistricting keeps moving voters before many know the line changed.

That is the story. Not one case. Not one map. One question: who gets counted when power is scared?

Source: Associated Press. The Supreme Court let the Trump administration end Temporary Protected Status protections for Haitians and Syrians, a decision AP said affects about 356,000 people inside a broader TPS population of about 1.3 million. These are workers, parents, renters, caregivers, and students' families whose lives were built around a legal promise the government now wants to yank back.

The Door

The same Court also let the administration revive restrictive asylum metering. The right can exist on paper while the door is controlled in practice. Keep the law. Choke the path to the law.

Source: Associated Press. A federal judge halted Trump's election executive order seeking a federal voter list and new mail-ballot limits. The lawsuit came from 22 states and Washington, D.C. The judge said the Constitution gives states the power to run elections, not the president.

Good. The order got blocked. But a blocked move is still a revealed plan. When someone keeps trying the door, the story is not only that the lock held. The story is that they want inside.

The List

Immigration status, citizenship rules, voter lists, mail ballots, and district maps are not separate subjects when the same project keeps asking the same question. Who belongs? Who counts? Who gets removed from the count before it starts?

The old version of voter suppression was easier to see: close the precinct, move the polling place, make the line six hours long. The new version says database integrity and election confidence.

Birthright citizenship is the biggest example. The 14th Amendment was written after slavery to stop America from inventing caste citizenship again. That was the point.

A federal voter list sounds boring in the way dangerous things often sound boring. Lists are how power gets efficient. A bad speech can scare people. A bad list can remove them.

What It Costs

Every mismatch becomes a potential weapon: name spelling, address format, missing document, old registration, student housing, rural mail route, married name, newly naturalized voter.

Source: Associated Press. AP's 2026 redistricting coverage says millions of people have already been placed in new voting districts ahead of the midterms. Voters can do everything right and still wake up inside a different political math problem.

For ordinary people, this is life squeezed through paperwork: a Haitian nursing assistant losing protection, a student whose address does not match, a Black neighborhood watching its voting power cracked apart and called neutrality.

The Power Read

The number to keep in your head is 356,000. But the bigger number is everyone watching the government test whether your life can be treated as a temporary administrative preference.

The administration does not need one giant anti-democracy button. It needs smaller levers: narrow citizenship, strip protection, restrict asylum, build a voter list, attack mail voting, redraw districts, and let courts bless the language after the damage.

They do not say, "We want fewer of you to count." They say, "We are restoring order." They do not say, "We want to decide who belongs." They say, "We are protecting citizenship."

The lie is stupid, but it is not harmless.

Your Move

Check your registration through USA.gov voter registration. Use NASS Can I Vote for state election rules. Track redistricting through the Brennan Center. Then forward this to one person who thinks voting rights are boring.

Power is trying to make counting look technical because the moral question is too ugly to say out loud: who gets counted, who gets removed, who gets moved, and who gets told their life is temporary?

Work To Do

Do the boring thing before the system makes it expensive. Check your registration now. Save your state election office page. Look up your district. If your name, address, campus housing, military address, rural route, or married name changed, treat that as a voting-rights issue, not paperwork.

If you want to help beyond your own ballot, send one person to USA.gov, one person to NASS Can I Vote, and one person to the Brennan Center tracker. Check early, then help someone.

They found a dirtier way to steal your vote: make you prove you count before you ever reach the ballot.
