The economy was supposed to add 115,000 jobs in June. It added 57,000. That's not a rounding error. That's half the number. April and May got revised down a combined 74,000 while nobody was looking.

And the same administration that produced those numbers is preparing to tell you: work, or lose your health insurance.

This is the Big Beautiful Bill. The Medicaid work requirements kick in January 1st, 2027. Eighty hours a month — employment, education, volunteering, community service — or you're out. The Congressional Budget Office says 11.8 million people will lose Medicaid over the next decade. Of those, 4.8 million lose it specifically because of work requirements.

But here's what doesn't make the press releases: most of those people are already working. We know this because Arkansas tried it in 2018. Before federal courts shut the program down, 18,000 Arkansans lost Medicaid coverage. The data showed most of them were employed. They didn't lose their insurance because they couldn't work.

They lost it because they couldn't navigate a government website to prove they were working.

The paperwork beat them. Not the requirement. And the paperwork was designed to beat them.

The man running the paperwork? Dr. Mehmet Oz — CMS Administrator, the most powerful person in American health care, the man who now sets the rules governing Medicaid and Medicare coverage for 90 million people. I need to be honest with you about something. I spent years inside Democratic politics — presidential campaigns, congressional offices, national media, defending a party I genuinely believed in. And I know what a setup looks like. I know what it looks like when a system is designed to hurt the people it pretends to help. I think about what this looks like on the ground. The woman who just got off a double shift at a hotel in a sector that shed 61,000 jobs last month. She opens a letter from Medicaid telling her she needs to document 80 hours of work activity. The deadline is two weeks away. The state website is broken. She doesn't have a lawyer. She doesn't have time. She doesn't have a TV show.

She has a letter.

Nobody's going to make that moment good television. Dr. Oz isn't going to stand at a podium and explain why she's about to lose her insurance in an economy he helped wreck. He's going to talk about independence. Self-sufficiency. The dignity of work. The same language he used when he was selling you raspberry ketones.
