The 3 Hours And 41 Minutes

Why Trump's tariff pause needs a trading investigation.

The public record does not prove insider trading. It proves why the trading records matter.

By Michael Starr Hopkins, Editor

The number: 3 hours and 41 minutes. That is the gap between Trump's April 9 Truth Social post saying it was a "great time to buy" and his later post announcing a 90-day pause on most reciprocal tariffs. Source label: American Presidency Project archive; AP/PBS; White House tariff order.

At 9:37 a.m. Eastern, with markets still bleeding from his tariff war, Trump told the country it was a great time to buy. Less than four hours later, at 1:18 p.m., he announced the thing markets wanted: a 90-day pause on most reciprocal tariffs, with China hit harder and most other countries given a temporary break.

Then the market exploded. The S&P 500 closed up 9.5%. The Nasdaq rose 12.2%. The Dow rose 7.9%. AP reported the S&P recovered about $4 trillion, roughly 70% of what it had lost over the previous four trading days. Source label: AP/PBS, April 10, 2025.

The Timeline Is The Story

Strip away the yelling and the campaign fog. The public record gives us a clean sequence: Trump imposed sweeping tariffs, markets sold off, Trump told people to buy, Trump reversed course, markets ripped higher, and lawmakers asked regulators whether anyone with advance knowledge cashed in.

The American Presidency Project archive lists the posts in Pacific time. BTP converts them to Eastern because U.S. markets trade on Eastern time: the buy post at 9:37 a.m. Eastern, the pause post at 1:18 p.m. Eastern.

By April 8, SPY had fallen from 564.52 at the April 2 close to 496.48. QQQ fell from 476.15 to 416.06. This was not a cable-news abstraction. It was retirement accounts, small-business inventory, hiring plans, mortgage nerves, and grocery bills sitting under a president's mood. What We Know And What We Do Not

What we know: the buy post, the pause post, the market rally, congressional requests, and official White House defense are public. What we do not know: who traded before the pause, who had advance notice, who spoke to whom, whether any suspicious trading referrals were opened, and whether regulators found misconduct.

Presidents can reassure markets. But when the same president publicly says buy hours before a market-moving reversal, regulators should find out who traded before the announcement. That is not hysteria. That is basic hygiene. Source label: AP/PBS, April 10, 2025.

The Options Question

Reuters reported that unidentified options traders placed million-dollar bullish bets in the minutes before the 1:18 p.m. pause announcement. One SPY call trade around 1:00 p.m. involved 5,105 contracts at an average price of $4.20. Reuters reported those calls later traded as high as about $42, a paper move from roughly $2.14 million to about $21.44 million if one holder had held the whole position. That still does not prove inside information. Options traders gamble on volatility every day. But "maybe they guessed" is not an answer. It is the beginning of the subpoena list. Rep. Steven Horsford later said traders placed large bullish bets about 18 minutes before the pause announcement; BTP treats that as a congressional claim until full trade-and-quote data is obtained. Why Normal People Should Care

The ordinary person gets squeezed twice. First by the tariff shock itself, which moves through importers, retailers, employers, suppliers, and consumers. Then by the information gap. If insiders get even a whisper before a market-moving reversal, they can play a different game than everybody else. Your 401(k) takes the roller coaster. Their options ticket gets the elevator.

The bottom line is simple: the public record does not prove the crime. It proves the country deserves the records. The SEC and CFTC should be able to answer whether suspicious trading alerts were opened, whether broker records identify unusual buyers, whether official communications show the pause decision was made before the buy post, and whether anyone in Trump's family, business orbit, donor network, cabinet, or advisory circle traded or tipped.

If nobody cheated, release the records that prove nobody cheated.
