Jeff Yass' TikTok Clock

By Michael Starr Hopkins

Congress passed the ban. The Court blessed it. The clock kept moving.

The TikTok law was not some narrow little culture-war stunt that slipped through at midnight. The House passed the divest-or-ban bill 352-65. The Senate passed the law 79-18. The Supreme Court upheld it unanimously in January 2025.

Then the enforcement deadline became a calendar trick.

Here is the number to hold onto: Sludge reported that Jeff Yass gave $16 million to Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC in the first half of 2025, while Trump was repeatedly delaying enforcement of the TikTok law. Yass' firm, Susquehanna, had a major ByteDance stake. NBC reported in 2024 that Susquehanna owned 15% of ByteDance and Yass personally held 7%.

The Terrain

The law took effect January 19, 2025. The White House's own September 2025 order lays out the delay chain: January 20 to April 5, April 4 to June 19, June 19 to September 17, September 16 to December 16, then another 120-day window to complete the deal.

That is the terrain: Congress spoke, the Court spoke, and then executive discretion did the walking.

The Machine

The machine is not hard to understand. The public hears national security. The platform hears survival. The donor class hears valuation.

Sludge reported Yass gave $1 million to MAGA Inc. on January 17, 2025, three days before Trump took office and issued the first delay. Sludge also reported a $15 million donation on March 6, about four weeks before the second delay.

The Proof

The proof is the overlap. NBC reported Yass had billions tied up in ByteDance. Sludge tied the 2025 MAGA Inc. contributions to FEC filings. The White House order itself documents the repeated enforcement delays. AP later reported the deal created a new American entity, with ByteDance retaining 19.9% of the joint venture.

That does not require pretending every meeting is a smoking gun. It requires saying what the record shows: the law's deadline was hard for everyone except the people powerful enough to keep moving it.

Who Pays

Ordinary people pay when the law becomes flexible for people with enough money on the table. They pay because a deadline that bends for a billionaire teaches everybody else what the system thinks deadlines are for.

The creator, the small business, the user, and the worker all get used as the human shield. The money fight happens above them. The national-security language happens around them. The deadline moves without them.

Between The Lines

The TikTok story is not only about TikTok. It is about what happens when national security, platform power, campaign money, and presidential discretion all meet in the same hallway.

If the law is serious, enforce it. If the law is wrong, change it. But do not sell the public a hard deadline and then quietly turn it into a donor calendar.

Hiring

This fight needs investigators, organizers, lawyers, data people, policy writers, local reporters, and designers who can turn records into pressure.
