If you shipped a box this week, you already paid it. Since midnight Central time on October 4, the Postal Service has tacked a temporary holiday surcharge onto its package services, and it stays on until midnight Central on January 17, 2027.

It did not come from a podium. It came in an August 25 press release, and it rides on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage. The filing sits in Postal Regulatory Commission Docket CP2026-10, per Federal Register, August 31, 2026.

Distance sets the price

The surcharge is priced by zone, and zone is postal for distance. At retail, the add-on for Ground Advantage and Priority Mail starts at 50 cents in the nearest zones and tops out at $9.10 on a Priority box headed to the farthest zones. The $20.80 at the top of the range belongs to Priority Mail Express bought at the counter.

By the Numbers

Every figure here is the surcharge alone, before regular postage.

$1.40 to $20.80: added to a Priority Mail Express package bought at retail, the post office price, Zones 1 to 9, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

$1.40 to $18.20: added to the same Express service at commercial rates, Zones 1 to 9, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

$0.50 to $3.90: added at retail to Priority Mail or Ground Advantage, Zones 1 to 4, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

$1.00 to $9.10: added at retail to Priority Mail, Zones 5 to 9, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

$0.75 to $7.50: added at retail to Ground Advantage, Zones 5 to 9, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

$0.40 to $7.70: added to commercial Ground Advantage across zones, per USPS, August 25, 2026.

Call it what it works like: a holiday tax on distance, collected from families who live far apart.

Same box, same service, higher ceiling at the counter

Put the two Express lines side by side. A business with a commercial account pays up to $18.20 extra to send a Priority Mail Express package. Walk into a post office and buy the same service at retail, and the add-on can reach $20.80.

USPS says the money is "to help cover extra handling costs to ensure a successful peak season." Take that at face value. Grant that December costs more to run, and grant that a business dropping off pre-sorted pallets is cheaper to handle than a walk-in with one box. On Express, the walk-in still faces the higher ceiling, and the walk-in is the one without a pricing department.

Call it what it works like: a holiday tax on distance, collected from families who live far apart. It is temporary, and it ends January 17. Until then, the price of shipping to the people you cannot visit goes up by the zone.

What to do before you ship

Check the chart before you pick a service. At retail, the Ground Advantage surcharge in the far zones tops out at $7.50, against $9.10 for Priority Mail. If the gift can ride a few more days, the slower service carries the lower ceiling.

Read the full USPS surcharge chart before your next trip to the counter.

Millions of dollars are coming for rural health. But thousands are losing Medicaid to pay for it.

West Virginia gets almost $200 million this year for rural health projects. The Urban Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation estimate 40,000 to 75,000 West Virginians on Medicaid will lose coverage by 2028.
