When checks carry the new raise

You are reading this before the number exists. At 8:30 AM Eastern the government releases September inflation data, and Social Security announces the 2027 raise from it this morning, after this email lands.

So nothing below is the official raise. The Senior Citizens League, a seniors advocacy group, put the 2027 raise at 3.5%, as reported by The Motley Fool on September 22. That forecast is three weeks old this morning, so treat it as an estimate until Social Security posts its own figure.

How the raise gets made

Nobody in Congress votes on this number each year. Lawmakers wired the raise to run on autopilot decades ago, and the law, 42 U.S.C. 415(i), ties it to consumer prices over the third quarter, the one that ends September 30. The Motley Fool reports the version used is the index for urban wage earners, called CPI-W. September is the last month of that quarter, which is why this morning's report settles it.

By the Numbers

What is known this morning, before the announcement.

8:30 AM Eastern: when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases September 2026 consumer prices, per BLS release schedule, read September 27, 2026.

2.8%: the Social Security raise for 2026, per Social Security Administration, October 24, 2025.

January: when Social Security checks carry the new raise, per Social Security Administration, October 24, 2025.

December 31, 2025: the day last cycle's higher SSI payments began, per Social Security Administration, October 24, 2025.

Record plate: Forecasters expect about 3.5% to 3.6%. The official number is not out yet.

What the number will and will not do

Whatever posts after 8:30, the raise shows up in Social Security checks in January. SSI usually moves first; last cycle, its increase started December 31.

A cost-of-living raise is a catch-up, not a gift. It pays back what prices already took. Last year's catch-up was 2.8%, and if the forecast holds, this one runs bigger, which tells you prices rose faster over the past year than in the year before.

The raise is automatic. The rest of the government is not. Congress funded agencies only through December 11, about eight weeks from today, under the stopgap signed September 2, and the fight over what comes next lands after the election.

Check the official number at Social Security after 8:30, then forward this to the person in your family who asks you about their check.

New · BTP Polling

Before you believe the poll, check who answered.

BTP now has a polling board. See who asked, who paid, when the survey ran and who answered. Adults, registered voters and likely voters stay separate. An average needs at least three different polling organizations with complete methods checked against their original releases.

You can inspect every included poll, see its weight and download the data. These are surveys, not election results.

Arleen Newhouse runs the home-delivered meals program at the Seniors Assistance Center in Norridge, Illinois, now a program of Aging Care Connections. “I used to be a driver and then we got too busy,” she told CBS Chicago. Five days a week she bags meals, schedules drivers and plans their routes.

This year the center marked her 50 years of service. “I think we do about 2,000 to 3,000 meals a month,” she said. By CBS Chicago’s estimate, that adds up to more than a million meals over the decades.

Millions of dollars are coming for rural health. But thousands are losing Medicaid to pay for it.

West Virginia gets almost $200 million this year for rural health projects. The Urban Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation estimate 40,000 to 75,000 West Virginians on Medicaid will lose coverage by 2028.
