You are reading this before the number exists. At 8:30 AM Eastern the government releases September inflation data, and Social Security announces the 2027 raise from it this morning, after this email lands.
So nothing below is the official raise. The Senior Citizens League, a seniors advocacy group, put the 2027 raise at 3.5%, as reported by The Motley Fool on September 22. That forecast is three weeks old this morning, so treat it as an estimate until Social Security posts its own figure.
How the raise gets made
Nobody in Congress votes on this number each year. Lawmakers wired the raise to run on autopilot decades ago, and the law, 42 U.S.C. 415(i), ties it to consumer prices over the third quarter, the one that ends September 30. The Motley Fool reports the version used is the index for urban wage earners, called CPI-W. September is the last month of that quarter, which is why this morning's report settles it.

What the number will and will not do
Whatever posts after 8:30, the raise shows up in Social Security checks in January. SSI usually moves first; last cycle, its increase started December 31.
A cost-of-living raise is a catch-up, not a gift. It pays back what prices already took. Last year's catch-up was 2.8%, and if the forecast holds, this one runs bigger, which tells you prices rose faster over the past year than in the year before.
The raise is automatic. The rest of the government is not. Congress funded agencies only through December 11, about eight weeks from today, under the stopgap signed September 2, and the fight over what comes next lands after the election.
