The national average for a gallon of regular ran about $2.98 in late February and hit $4.55 by early May — the highest pump prices in four years. (AAA, national gas price averages, Feb.–May 2026) |
Watch a man do the math at the pump. Not on paper. In his head, nozzle in hand, the total climbing past where it stopped last month. He does not need a chart. He is living inside one. |
The one number, and what it hides |
Run the arithmetic and the squeeze is plain: about $1.57 more per gallon for the exact same drive. A commuter burning roughly 11 gallons a week is paying on the order of $17 more every week to get to the same job — about $75 a month — and nothing about the destination changed. (BTP estimate, based on the AAA move above; individual mileage varies.) |
When gas jumps, the family budget does not debate the macro story. It starts cutting in real time. The trip gets shorter. The grocery list gets meaner. Somebody decides the weekend visit can wait. The people being told the economy is strong are staring at a dashboard that says something else. They know what they paid in February. They know what they paid in May. |
Who gets protected |
The second half of the story is who gets shielded while the squeeze lands. In Trump's first year, U.S. billionaire wealth climbed $1.5 trillion, from about $6.7 trillion to $8.2 trillion — a 22 percent gain. (Americans for Tax Fairness, Trump's first year.) |
Over the same stretch, four big tech companies whose CEOs stood at the inauguration — Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla — avoided $51 billion in taxes and paid an effective federal rate of just 4.9 percent on $315 billion in profits. (ITEP.) So the pain at the pump is not bad luck or weather or one refinery outage. It is the same old split screen: ordinary people paying retail while power gets another carve-out. |
The deep cut |
I spent years on the other side of this. I sat in rooms where we sanded down the line about a strong economy and then went hunting for the poll that made it sound true. We told ourselves the numbers were the story, and the guy at the pump was a demographic, not a person. That was the mistake, and it cost people who trusted us to actually see them. You do not win a man back by handing him a better dashboard. You win him back by admitting the dashboard was never the thing he was measuring. |
Between the lines |
Gas is one of the last prices people can quote without checking an app. They remember the number from last week and last month. They compare it against the speech coming out of Washington, and when the two stories do not match, trust breaks fast. |
If working people are told to absorb an extra $75 a month at the pump, who exactly is being asked to absorb anything on the other side of the ledger — and what does it say when the answer is nobody rich and nobody connected? |
Bottom line |
A politics that wants credit for growth but has no language for the daily commute will keep losing people who feel the economy every morning before they feel it in any statistic. The man at the pump is not confused. He is taking the measurement the system cannot spin away. |
Forward this to one person who's tired of being told the economy is fine while the pump says otherwise. |
